Job sharing

Advantages to employees and employers

  • The employee has the flexibility of part-time work.
  • Job sharing can give access to the variety, responsibility and relatively advantageous conditions of full-time work, but with shorter hours. Job sharing is quite often found in professional-level work, while other part-time working can often involve fairly low-status and routine work.
  • Increasingly, people want responsible and satisfying jobs, but also adequate time for other aspects of their lives, such as family, voluntary work, hobbies and interests. Job sharing allows the possibility of keeping a career going alongside these responsibilities.
  • Employers can benefit from the increased flexibility. For instance, job sharing can give continuity during holidays, sick leave or busy periods, and it can increase morale and lower staff turnover.
  • The more people who work in the organisation, the greater the potential quality and diversity of skills and experience available to the employer.
